Biopesticides include naturally occurring substances that control pests (biochemical pesticides) and microorganisms that control pests (microbial pesticides).

Biopesticide use in Kenya and Africa
African agriculture largely relies heavily on artificial fertilizers and pesticides, whose use has more than doubled in the last four years. Some of the pesticides are very toxic and have been banned in the European markets. Due to lack of information and proper training, many farmers are not aware that these pesticides and chemicals have been banned in their countries of origin and continue using them. Many do not know the correct way to use sprays or how to protect themselves and the environment and are also not aware of the possible alternatives to the deadly chemicals. Farmers also don't know that farms have beneficial organisms (parasitoids and predators) which keep pest numbers under control. Synthetic pesticides kill natural beneficial organisms and have direct harmful effects to animals and humans. Biopesticides are important alternatives to synthetic pesticides. Non chemical crop protection using biopesticides controls harmful pests and diseases without harming non target organisms. Biopesticides are categorized based on how they are derived;

Microbial and Macrobial biopesticides- Microbials are micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi, viruses or their products that have pesticidal effect. Macrobials are macro-organisms such as predatory mites, beetles and nematodes which are natural enemies of harmful pests. Microbials and Macrobials can further be defined as parasitoids, predators and pathogens.

Botanical biopesticides- These are natural plant products such as of neem, pyrethrum, etc.

Biochemical biopesticides - These are naturally occuring chemicals that control pests. These include insect sex pheromes, enzymes (proteins), natural plant regulators and insect growth regulators.
